LARCC members present minicourse at Southern Region event
LARCC members Anderson M. Maliszewski and Adriano Vogel, together with their mentors (Dalvan Griebler, Claudio Schepke, and Philippe O. A. Navaux), presented a short course entitled “Private Cloud Computing Environment for Testing and Development of Parallel Programs” in the event XX Regional School of High Performance of the South Region (ERAD/RS 2021). The short ourse lasted 2 hours, with a conceptual part and a practical part, which can be seen in the recorded video of the event.
In addition to the short course presentation, the authors also wrote a book chapter available here that has the following summary:
“High performance computing usually uses clusters of computers for running parallel applications. Alternatively, cloud computing offers distributed computing resources for processing at a level of abstraction beyond the traditional, dynamic, on-demand level. This chapter aims to introduce basic concepts, present the basics of deploying a private cloud and demonstrate the benefits of developing and testing parallel programs in the cloud.”
The short course aimed to introduce to students basic concepts, deploy a private cloud, and demonstrate the benefits of developing and testing parallel programs. Currently, running parallel applications in cloud environments is a relevant topic. Moreover, computing environments for running applications are becoming more dynamic and/or shared. For example, several existing applications need to be ported to cloud environments, and new applications are developed using cloud APIs (Application Programming Interface). Considering that performance and efficient use of resources demands knowledge about how the environment works and how to execute applications, IT professionals need to be trained and qualified to exploit the constantly evolving computing environments and systems efficiently.
